How to Categorize and Sort Assignments by Priority

Priority-based assignment organization

Published on July 1, 2026

Not all assignments are created equal. A weighted exam is very different from a low-stakes discussion post. Smart students prioritize accordingly.

Priority Categories

High Priority (Do First):
  • Exams and major projects
  • Assignments with high grade weights
  • Work due soonest

  • Medium Priority:
  • Regular homework and essays
  • Assignments worth moderate grade percentage
  • Work due next week

  • Low Priority:
  • Participation activities
  • Discussion posts
  • Optional extra credit

  • Prioritization Methods

Use the Eisenhower Matrix: focus on work that's both important AND urgent. This ensures you don't waste time on low-impact tasks when high-impact work is due soon.

    Daily Prioritization Routine

Each morning, identify your top 3 most important tasks for that day. Tackle those before other distractions.

    Impact on Grades

Students who prioritize effectively see GPA improvements of 0.5-1.0 points compared to those who work on assignments randomly.
